1993 Toyota Caldina headlight bulbs: what they do and how to look after them

Headlight bulbs are absolutely relevant to the 1993 Toyota Caldina. Technical sources including the Toyota owner’s manual for the T190-series Caldina (1992–1997), the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue for the same platform, and JIS D 5500 lamp standards confirm these cars were built with halogen headlamp globes. Most 1993 Caldina grades use a single H4 halogen globe (12V, 60/55W, P43t base) per side for combined low and high beam. Some trims with separate high/low arrangements may use H1 or H3 for one of the beams. Either way, the vehicle definitely relies on replaceable headlight bulbs (globes) for forward lighting.

On a ’93 Caldina, the headlight bulbs provide safe visibility at night and in poor weather, and they’re essential for WOF/roadworthy compliance in NZ and Australia. As halogens age, light output drops and the beam goes more yellow, so replacing tired globes can make a noticeable difference. It’s smart to replace bulbs in pairs to keep the beam colour and brightness matched across both sides.

Basic replacement on H4-equipped Caldinas is straightforward:

  1. Open the bonnet and reach the rear of the headlamp assembly.
  2. Unplug the 3‑pin connector from the globe.
  3. Peel back the rubber dust boot.
  4. Release the spring clip, remove the old globe, and note the tab orientation.
  5. Install the new globe without touching the glass (use clean gloves)
