1992 Suzuki Vitara headlights
Headlights are absolutely fitted to the 1992 Suzuki Vitara and are required for on‑road use. This is supported by the Suzuki Vitara/Escudo service literature for 1989–1995 models and the 1992 owner’s handbook, which specify halogen headlamps. It’s also mandated by Australian Design Rules (ADR 13/00 – installation of lighting) and the New Zealand Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Lighting 2004, so the vehicle is designed and wired to run proper low and high beams.
On a ’92 Vitara, the headlights do the heavy lifting after dark and in poor weather—projecting a dipped beam for everyday driving and a high beam for open‑road visibility. Most AU/NZ models of this era use a dual‑filament H4 60/55 W halogen bulb in each headlamp, giving both beams from the one globe. The housings are designed for that light pattern, which helps avoid glare and keeps the car compliant for WOF or roadworthy checks.
As part of regular servicing, it’s smart to keep the lights clear, correctly aimed and electrically sound. Off‑road use, corrugations and coastal air can all age connectors and lenses. Replace bulbs in pairs to keep brightness and colour even, and stick with the correct wattage—over‑wattage globes can cook wiring and may breach ADR/WOF requirements. If the lens is hazed or yellowed, a quality restoration kit can recover output, but cracked or waterlogged lamps should be replaced.
DIY bulb swaps are straightforward under the bonnet on most trims. Quick guide:
- Switch lights off, key out. Open the bonnet and locate the rear of the headlamp.
- Unplug the 3‑pin H4 connector and peel back the rubber dust boot.
- Release the spring clip, remove the old globe. Avoid touching the new globe’s glass.
- Seat the new H4 correctly (tabs aligned), refit clip, boot and connector. Test low/high beam.
Check aim yearly, after suspension work, or if other drivers flash you. Use the vertical/horizontal adjusters on the lamp backs and a flat surface facing a wall
