1991 Suzuki Jimny headlight bulbs
Headlight bulbs are absolutely used on the 1991 Suzuki Jimny. Suzuki’s factory literature for the JA11-era Jimny (1990–1995) lists replaceable halogen H4 12V 60/55W bulbs for the headlamps, and the Suzuki Electronic Parts Catalogue includes an H4 bulb as a service item for this model. Independent manuals covering the same generation (e.g., Haynes for SJ410/Samurai/Sierra) also specify H4 60/55W. Some export “Sierra” variants in the early 90s were supplied with 7-inch sealed-beam lamps, but the 1991 Jimny spec commonly found in Japan, NZ and many retrofits in AU uses replaceable H4 bulbs. Always check the owner’s handbook or EPC against the VIN to confirm what’s fitted.
On a 1991 Jimny, the headlight bulbs do the heavy lifting for safe night and low-visibility driving, providing both low and high beam out of a single H4 globe. Good bulbs keep the beam crisp, help pass WoF/RWC checks, and reduce eye strain on long country runs.
As part of routine servicing, it’s smart to check beam operation, colour and brightness, and the condition of the connectors and rubber boots behind the lamps. Replace in pairs so light output stays even left to right. If a bulb looks cloudy, has a dark spot, or the beam has gone a dull yellow, it’s due.
Typical replacement on an H4-equipped 1991 Jimny goes like this:
- Open the bonnet and reach the rear of the headlamp.
- Unplug the 3-pin connector and peel back the rubber dust boot.
- Release the spring clip, withdraw the old H4 bulb.
- Install a new H4 12V 60/55W bulb (align the tabs), avoid touching the glass.
- Refit clip, boot and connector, test both beams and check aim.
Tips that save hassle: don’t up-rate to 100/90W bulbs without upgraded relays and wiring—heat and current can cook the switchgear and won’t fly with ADR/NZTA rules. If the Jimny does a lot of corrugated gravel work, consider long-life or heavy-duty H4s and check earths, vibration kills filaments quickly. A dab of dielectric grease on the connector helps keep moisture and corrosion at bay. If the vehicle still has sealed-beam units, an ADR/E-marked 7-inch H4 conversion is a common, legal path to easier bulb changes and better light, provided the beam pattern is correct and the lights are aimed after fitting.
Referencing: Suzuki Jimny JA11 Factory Service Manual (headlamp: H4 12V 60/55W), Suzuki Electronic Parts Catalogue (H4 bulb listed as service part), and Haynes SJ410/Samurai/Sierra manual for the same generation bulb specifications.
What bulb type fits a 1991 Suzuki Jimny?
Most 1991 Jimny models use an H4 halogen 12V 60/55W bulb. Some export “Sierra” variants of similar vintage may have 7-inch sealed-beam lamps, those don’t have a separate bulb and are replaced as a complete unit. Check your handbook or VIN-based parts lookup if unsure.
Can LED H4 replacements be used?
Plenty of H4 LED retrofits exist, but they must be road-legal and produce a correct beam pattern in the Jimny’s reflector to pass WoF/RWC. If fitting LED, choose ADR/E-marked units designed for reflectors, install carefully, and re-aim the lights. Otherwise stick with quality halogen H4s.
Why do new bulbs keep blowing?
Common causes are vibration from off-road use, overvoltage (check alternator output), touching the glass during install, poor earths, or corroded connectors. Use long-life H4s, avoid handling the glass, tidy up the grounds, and consider relay upgrades if voltage drop is high.
