For Australian and New Zealand–delivered 1990 Suzuki Vitara models (1.6-litre G16A, typically carburetted), an EGR valve generally isn’t fitted and isn’t required. This position is supported by factory literature and regional manuals that show EGR equipment as market-dependent: the Suzuki Vitara/Sidekick service manual diagrams EGR only on certain emissions packages (notably North America), while Australian-focused guides such as Gregory’s Suzuki Vitara 1988–1997 detail EGR primarily on later EFI/16‑valve variants and specific export specs. The Suzuki EPC (dealer parts listings) for AU/NZ likewise doesn’t list an EGR valve for 1990 carb models, and period ADR 37/00 emissions rules didn’t mandate EGR where compliance could be met using catalytic conversion, ignition timing strategies and mixture control.

Why wasn’t EGR used here? The early Vitara’s modest-compression G16A with carburetion and a three-way catalytic converter could meet local NOx targets without the added complexity of exhaust gas recirculation. Keep the PCV system, vacuum hoses and carb/ignition tune in top nick, make sure the catalytic converter isn’t blocked, and fix any exhaust leaks before the oxygen sensor.
