1990 Suzuki Swift headlights
Headlights are absolutely relevant and factory-fitted on the 1990 Suzuki Swift. That’s supported by the 1990 Swift owner’s handbook and Suzuki SF413 workshop literature, as well as Australian Design Rules ADR 13/00 and ADR 46/00, which set mandatory lighting and headlamp performance for vehicles on Australian roads. New Zealand requirements under the Warrant of Fitness regime also expect operational dipped and high beams. In AU/NZ specification, these Swifts commonly use H4 12V 60/55W halogen bulbs in composite headlamp units.
On a 1990 Swift, the headlights do two critical jobs: help the driver see the road ahead and make the vehicle visible to everyone else. Clear, correctly aimed beams reduce night-time fatigue, improve reaction time, and keep the car compliant for rego or WOF checks. Because halogen capsules slowly dim with use, owners often don’t notice the drop in light output until it’s pretty average on wet nights.
For easy servicing, treat headlight care like a regular maintenance item. Inspect operation, clarity, and aim at each service or every 10,000–15,000 kilometres. If the plastic lenses are hazy, a plastic-safe polish can restore light output. Any moisture inside the lamp points to a perished seal or boot that should be replaced before it cooks the reflector.
When it’s time to replace bulbs, choose quality name-brand H4s with the standard 60/55W rating. Higher-wattage or blue-tinted bulbs can run hotter, strain wiring, and reduce effective road illumination. Replace bulbs in pairs to keep the beam colour and brightness matched left to right.
