1988 Suzuki Swift headlight-bulbs
For Australian and New Zealand–delivered 1988 Suzuki Swift models, separate headlight-bulbs aren’t typically used. These cars were factory-fitted with rectangular sealed-beam halogen headlamps, where the filament, reflector and lens are a single, sealed unit. That means when a lamp fails, the whole headlamp assembly is replaced rather than just a bulb. This setup is documented in the Suzuki SA310/SA413 Factory Service Manual (Lighting System, 1983–1988) and echoed in the Holden Barina MB/ML (1985–1988) workshop literature, as the Barina is the local badge-engineered variant. Major AU/NZ aftermarket catalogues from brands like Narva and Hella also list sealed-beam headlamp assemblies—not H4/9003 bulbs—for 1985–1988 Swift/Barina applications.
Why did Suzuki go sealed-beam on these models? At the time, sealed-beam units were widely used to meet durability and standardisation requirements, and they simplified servicing: no fiddly bulb changes, just a straightforward lamp swap when needed.
If the Swift’s headlights are dim or have failed, the fix is to replace the sealed-beam unit on the affected side. Most owners can manage this with basic tools:
- Remove the headlamp bezel/retaining ring, unplug the three-pin connector, swap the sealed-beam unit, then refit and aim the light.
- While you’re there, inspect the plug for heat damage, clean earth points, and check the headlight fuse and relay if both sides are out.
- Keep the glass lens clean and free of chips, even small pits scatter light and reduce performance.
Plenty of AU/NZ owners choose to convert to a semi-sealed “H4” headlamp housing, which takes a replaceable H4 bulb. That’s fine when done properly, but make sure the housings are ADR-compliant, wiring is healthy, and bulb wattage stays within legal limits to avoid glare or cooked connectors.
