1986 Suzuki Jimny wheel bearings
Wheel bearings are absolutely fitted to the 1986 Suzuki Jimny (also sold locally as the SJ/Sierra). Factory literature confirms it: the Suzuki SJ413/Sierra Workshop Manual lists serviceable tapered roller bearings in the front hubs and pressed-on tapered roller bearings at the rear axle, with detailed adjustment and replacement procedures in the Front Axle/Hub and Rear Axle sections. The Haynes Suzuki SJ & Samurai manual (1981–1994) describes the same service steps. Genuine parts catalogues for the era also show the inner/outer front hub bearings, hub seals, lock nuts and washers, plus the rear axle bearing and retainer ring. So, wheel bearings are very much relevant to this model.
On a 1986 Jimny, the wheel bearings let the wheels spin smoothly while taking radial and axial loads from the vehicle, cornering and braking. Up front, the live axle hubs use adjustable, serviceable tapered roller bearings. Down the back, the semi-floating axle runs a pressed-on tapered roller bearing and seal. They’re tough, but with an old-school 4x4 that sees corrugations, mud and river crossings, they need periodic love.
For regular servicing, it’s wise to check bearing free play and noise at each service and repack the front bearings with a quality NLGI #2 wheel bearing grease at sensible intervals, or sooner after deep water or mud. Any rumbling that rises with speed, heat at the hub, weeping seals or play when rocking the tyre at 12 and 6 o’clock means it’s time to act. Up front, the job is classic: remove the freewheeling hub, clean and inspect the inner/outer bearings and races, replace the hub seal, then set the preload and lock the nuts to the workshop manual spec. Always use a new lock washer and make sure the hub turns smoothly with zero roughness and just the right drag. Out back, the bearing is pressed on the axle with a retainer ring
