Maintaining and Replacing Headlights on Your 1986 Mitsubishi Pajero

When it comes to keeping your 1986 Mitsubishi Pajero roadworthy and safe, one area that often doesn't get enough attention is the headlights. These vital components not only illuminate the road ahead during night-time driving but also ensure that others can see you in low visibility conditions. Over time, headlights can become dim, damaged, or misaligned, which can compromise safety. Understanding how to maintain and replace them is an essential part of vehicle upkeep.

Headlights on the 1986 Mitsubishi Pajero are typically sealed beam units. This means the bulb is encapsulated in a sealed glass housing, which needs to be replaced in its entirety when a bulb burns out, unlike more modern vehicles that allow for just the bulb's replacement. While this might seem a bit inconvenient, the good news is that replacing sealed beam headlights is a straightforward process and often does not require any special tools.

Here are some key steps and considerations for replacing your Pajero's headlights:

  1. Ensure Safety First: Before working on your headlights, make sure your Pajero is turned off and parked on a flat surface. Engage the parking brake and ensure the electrical system is switched off.
  2. Access the Headlights: Open the bonnet and locate the rear of the headlight assembly. You may need to remove any cover or screws holding the assembly in place.
  3. Disconnect the Wiring Harness: Unplug the electrical connector at the back of the headlight. This might be a little snug, so a gentle wiggle can help free it without damage.
  4. Remove the Old Headlight: You might need to remove a retaining ring or clips that hold the sealed beam in place. Once these are out, the old headlight can be removed easily.
  5. Install the New Headlight: Position the new sealed beam unit into the assembly. Secure it with any retaining rings or clips you removed previously.
  6. Reconnect and Test: Plug the wiring harness back into the new headlight. Before finalising everything, turn on your Pajero's headlights to make sure they are functioning correctly.

In addition to replacement, regular maintenance of headlights is also recommended. This includes cleaning the headlight lenses to keep them clear of dirt and grime that can accumulate and reduce light output. If the lenses become cloudy or yellowed, using a headlight restoration kit can restore clarity and improve effectiveness significantly.

In some cases, you might notice that your headlights are misaligned. Proper alignment is crucial to ensure beams are pointing correctly and not blinding other drivers. While it may be possible to make minor adjustments yourself, if you are unsure, it's advisable to have a professional service person assist with alignment.

Maintaining well-functioning headlights is an integral part of caring for your 1986 Mitsubishi Pajero. Not only will it enhance your driving visibility and safety, but it will also ensure your vehicle remains compliant with road safety standards.
