1985 Suzuki Swift Headlights: purpose, care and replacement

Headlights are absolutely fitted and relevant on the 1985 Suzuki Swift. Factory literature and regulations confirm their use: Suzuki SA310/Swift (1983–1988) workshop manual electrical section, Holden Barina MB (1985–1988) Owner’s Handbook, Australian Design Rules ADR 13/00 and ADR 46/00 for lighting, and New Zealand NZTA Warrant of Fitness (VIRM) Lighting requirements. Those sources document sealed-beam or halogen headlamps as original equipment and mandate their correct operation for road use.

On this era Swift, the headlights do the heavy lifting after dark and in poor weather—helping the driver see down the road and making the little hatch easy to spot by others. Depending on market and trim, it may run rectangular sealed-beam units or a replaceable H4 60/55W halogen globe in a rectangular housing. Either setup is simple, tough, and cheap to service.

As part of routine servicing, they should get attention every six months or at each rego/WoF check. Scan for dull or yellowed lenses, cracks, moisture inside the lamp, and flaky connectors. A quick aim check keeps the beam where it should be—good forward throw without dazzling oncoming traffic.

  • Globe choice: If it’s H4, stick with 60/55W quality halogen. Avoid higher wattage without a relay upgrade, as original wiring and switches are modest. If it’s sealed-beam, replace the whole unit with the correct left-hand-traffic pattern (ADR/NZ-compliant).
  • Replace in pairs: Matching output and colour keeps the beam even and predictable.
  • Connections: Clean the earth point and 3-pin headlamp plug
