Repco DOT 4 Brake Fluid Low Viscosity
Repco DOT 4 LV is a low viscosity brake fluid formulated to have a higher dry boiling point. If a fluid boils, it produces bubbles of vapour and vapour is compressible. So instead of your foot compressing the brake callipers, it is compressing the vapour. Result? No brakes. This is known as ‘vapour lock’. The higher boiling point of Repco DOT 4 LV is an added safety feature that helps to prevent boiling under the high temperatures experienced when braking.
When it comes to servicing your car, changing out your brake pads and rotors is fairly common place and widely accepted as one of the essential replacement service items to change when performing routine maintenance. However, one of the most overlooked components of your braking system is the brake fluid. Recommended for replacement every 2 years, brake fluid is a hydraulic oil which transfers brake pedal pressure into caliper pressure thus slowing down your car. Over time and throughout its heat cycles, all brake fluid loses effectiveness and eventually requires replacement. Moisture can also build up inside your hydraulic braking system which will contaminate the fluid and thus reduce performance and reliability of your brakes.
Knowing when to change your brake fluid is fairly simple. Outside of the recommended 2 year service life, brake fluid should be replaced if the pedal feels at all spongey or squishy or if you have boiled the brake fluid when tackling steep descent and heavy braking. If you're still uncertain, a brake fluid tester will give an accurate indication of the health of your brake fluid so you know whether its time for some fresh fluid. When topping up or replacing your brake fluid, it is important to limit the time that the fluid reservoir cap is off as any moisture from the atmosphere can contaminate the fluid. Keeping some rags on hand will also allow you to mop up any spillages as brake fluid can damage paintwork or rubber hoses if left for extended periods of time.
Available in DOT 3, DOT 4, and DOT 5.1, Repco brake fluid is designed to suit a number of applications and vehicle types. Brake rotors will eventually wear down from friction and corrosion. Replacing them is an important part of maintenance and can be done at home with the right tools.
Brake clutch master and slave Cylinders and drum brake wheel cylinders are probably parts you’ve heard of, but what do they do specifically? Learn more in this handy Know How article.
The brake on your vehicle is designed to be changed around every 60,000km and are one of the most critical safety components on your vehicle. Your brake pads should be regularly inspected during planned or scheduled servicing and maintenance to ensure that the pad is replaced prior to causing further damage or wear on other braking components such as your brake rotor resulting in higher servicing and replacement part costs.
