Socket Set Accessories

Tom Vondrasek | 26th July 2025 | 3 minutes to read

When it comes to socket sets, most people focus on the sockets and ratchets themselves, though the real unsung heroes are the accessories that come alongside them. Socket set accessories add a whole new dimension to your tool kit, making your socket set far more versatile and adaptable to a wide range of tasks. Whether you’re a professional mechanic, a weekend warrior, or just someone who likes to be prepared, understanding these accessories can make a big difference in your efficiency and ease of work

Most accessories are available in 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 or even 3/4 inch drives so not matter which set you have, an accessory is available. The joy is these drives (drive peg size) are a universal fit, making them compatible with almost any socket set no matter the brand. Mixing and matching accessories across brands won’t compromise fit or function, giving you greater flexibility and choice.

In this article, we’ll explore the most common socket set accessories you’ll find on the market, their uses, and why they should be an essential part of your toolbox:

  1. Breaker Bar
  2. Sliding T Handle
  3. Extension Bars
  4. Swivel or Universal Joint
  5. Drive Adaptors
  6. Socket Clip Rail
  7. Special Sockets
  8. Accessories - a good investment

Breaker Bar

Unlike a ratchet, a breaker bar has no internal mechanism to allow ratcheting. It is longer than a ratchet and is a strong sturdy bar with a drive peg on one end. It is available in 1/4, 3/8 or 1/2 inch drive sizes.

The primary purpose of a breaker bar is to provide extra leverage. The longer handle means you can apply much more torque and force to stubborn, tight nuts and bolts than you could with a ratchet alone. They are especially handy when loosening or tightening high torque items like wheel nuts.

They are handy to use on seized or rusted fasteners for that extra tension though exercise caution as they can shear or snap off the offending item.

Sliding T Handle

The sliding T handle is a breaker bar that has a movable drive peg. It is basically a metal rod with a drive peg that can slide along its length. This sliding mechanism lets you position the drive peg wherever you want along the bar, giving you a range of leverage options when turning fasteners.

The common use is a T handle allowing you to use both hands to twist the nut or bolt on or off.

Extension Bars

Space around a modern car or engine is a luxury as manufacturers make greater use of it by trying to cram mechanical items into a smaller footprint. This makes fasteners that hold things together difficult to access. To help, extension bars are a simple yet vital accessory that come in varying lengths. They allow you to extend the reach of your socket and ratchet, helping you get to nuts and bolts tucked away in narrow or recessed areas where your hand just won’t fit.

Most socket sets come with at least one extension bar, but having a few in different lengths can make a huge difference when working on engines and other parts of a vehicle. You can even put different length bars together to get the perfect reach. That’s why a good range of extension bars is like a good range of socket sizes.

Swivel or Universal Joint

When you can’t approach a fastener in a straight line, a swivel or universal joint is invaluable. This handy accessory connects between your ratchet, extension bar if required and socket. It allows the socket to pivot at an angle, usually between around 45° and 90°. Naturally if it is 90°, you don’t need to use it.

This pivoting action lets you “bend around” objects or get into spaces that would otherwise be impossible without it. Whether you’re working amidst tight engine bays or under the vehicle, a universal joint can save you time and frustration by giving you greater accessibility.

Drive Adaptors

Drive adaptors significantly expand your toolkit’s flexibility by allowing you to use sockets and accessories of one drive size with tools of another. For example, if you have a 3/8 inch drive socket set, but need to use a 1/2 inch drive socket, a 3/8 inch female to 1/2 inch male drive adaptor lets you connect these mismatched parts seamlessly.

Common adaptor options include:

  • 1/4 inch female to 3/8 inch male
  • 3/8 inch female to 1/4 inch male
  • 3/8 inch female to 1/2 inch male
  • 1/2 inch female to 3/8 inch male

However, one important tip: exercise caution with torque loads when using adaptors, especially when reducing drive sizes. Applying too much force can damage the adaptor or the smaller drive tool.

Socket Clip Rail

It can be challenging to keep sockets organised and readily accessible, especially when you begin to accumulate extras. That’s where a socket clip rail comes in.

These rails allow you to clip sockets in size order onto a rail that fits your drive size, keeping your sockets neatly together and sorted. This makes it easy to find the right socket quickly, helps prevent loss, and makes your workplace tidier and safer. Really handy when packing up as you can see if one is missing.

Special Sockets

Beyond standard sockets, there are a number of special sockets uniquely designed for distinct purposes, making specific jobs easier and preventing damage to parts.

Things like:

  • Spark Plug Sockets These sockets have a rubber padding or insert to grip the insulator of the spark plug securely. This ensures the plug doesn’t fall out when you’re fitting or removing it, protecting the delicate ceramic insulator.
  • Wheel Nut Sockets Often padded with plastic, these protect anodised or painted alloy wheels from scratches and scuffs when removing or tightening the wheel nuts.
  • Sensor Sockets Designed for delicate sensor replacements, these sockets grip sensors without damaging them, essential for automotive diagnostics and repairs.

Accessories - a good investment

Socket set accessories might not get the same spotlight as sockets or ratchets, but their impact on your toolkit’s versatility and efficiency cannot be overstated. From breaker bars that give you brute force, to extension bars and universal joints that help you work in tight or awkward spaces, these accessories make many tough jobs manageable.

Thanks to the universal drive sizes—1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 inch—you can build a flexible, complementary collection of accessories regardless of your socket set brand. Whether it’s the sliding T handle for extra leverage, drive adaptors to mix drive sizes, or specialised sockets to protect vital parts, these tools will help you work smarter and with greater confidence.

So, if you’re looking to expand your toolkit or are deciding what to buy next, consider not just the sockets but the accessories that will make your socket set truly versatile.
