How To Perform a Cooling System Pressure Test

If your vehicle is overheating and losing coolant, you may need to before a cooling system pressure test. You'll need to get a cooling system pressure test kit, also known as a radiator pressure test kit, which uses a pump to diagnose coolant leaks and overheating issues on most vehicles.

This is a fairly simple procedure, but you'll still want some safety equipment like gloves and goggles, as well as some coolant that is compatible with your vehicle.

Step By Step for Performing a Cooling System Pressure Test

1

Make sure your engine is cooled down before performing the test as it’s easy to get burned while the engine is hot.

2

Locate the correct adapter for your coolant filler neck from the radiator pressure test kit. You can usually use a visual comparison to see which adapter will fit correctly.

Pump the plunger to the required pressure, which is usually between 12 and 15 Psi. When pressure is reached, the needle should remain steady to show that the cooling system is holding pressure. If the needle drops, this indicates a loss of pressure in the system and further diagnosis is required.
