Repco | 19th Dec 2023 | 2 minutes to read
Jump starters are an indispensable piece of equipment for off-road and work vehicles, as well as for your family car. Not only are they a life saver when your battery goes flat in the middle of nowhere, they can also be used to charge other electronics, such as your mobile phone, with many of them having usb ports for simple connectivity and charging.
Starting a car with a flat battery using a jump starter is a fairly simple process that requires just the jump starter itself and the accompanying cables.
There are a few preliminary checks to do before jump starting your car.
Firstly, make sure that the jump starter is charged before attempting to start your vehicle.
Secondly, ensure that your engine is not too big for the jump starter you are using. Most starters will list the engine capacities that they can start in litres for both petrol and diesel. If your jump starter isn't powerful enough to start your engine, you won't get an effective jump start.
Step By Step for Using a Jump Starter
Attach the black clamp to the negative terminal of the battery.
Attach the red clamp to the positive terminal of the battery.

Start the engine.
Get the vehicle idling smoothly before carefully removing the clamps from the terminals and switching off the battery starter.
