How To Perform a Battery Replacement

This battery replacement was performed on a 1997 Falcon Ute. These older vehicles are generally easier to replace the battery in, as they have limited electronics. A lot of newer vehicles require a keep-alive battery and may even need a scan tool to reset the battery monitor. Before changing the battery, it is a good idea to check the owner's manual for your vehicle to see what is required.
In this case, resetting the clock and some programmed in radio stations is the worst problem being caused. This is minor compared to not being able to start and drive the car, which can occur in some cases.
Overall, battery replacement is not hard, just be aware batteries are heavy and contain acid. Take care lifting them and do not let them tip over or drop them. Gloves and safety glasses are a good safety precaution to use if not confident.
Step By Step for Replacing a Battery
Verify your battery is the problem. In this case the green “I am OK” light had gone out and the car would not start. The battery was recharged and while it worked for a short time it did not hold the charge or bring back the “I am OK’ light.
Pick the correct battery for your vehicle. They come in different sizes and ratings and the battery terminals can be in different spots. Choosing the wrong one can make it hard or even impossible to fit.
With the car turned off and key removed from the ignition, lift the bonnet. Undo the battery terminals starting with the negative one (minus sign) first. Then undo the positive one (plus sign) next.
Undo and remove the battery hold-down clamp. Carefully take out the old battery.
Sit the old battery on the ground bedside the new battery and do a quick comparison. Make sure the size is the same and the battery terminals are in the same position.
Carefully put the new battery back in the car making sure the battery terminals are in the same spot.
Reconnect the battery terminals and make sure they are tight. If you can move them with your hand, they are too loose. Loose terminals make poor conductors and can lead to starting issues.
Replace and tighten down the hold-down clamp. It needs to be firm. Take care not to overtighten as it can crack the battery case.
You can use a spray-on terminal protector to stop corrosion occurring. If the terminals have corrosion on them, then it needs to be cleaned off before applying the terminal protector.
Close the bonnet and start the car. You'll need to reset the clock and reprogram the radio stations.
