How To Install a Redarc Brake Controller

A lot of heavy trailers and caravans use electric brakes for stopping. Most vehicles are not equipped for this so an electronic brake controller to actuate the trailer or caravan brakes is required. This unit takes the signal that the tow vehicle is braking and then operates the electric brakes on the trailer. They activate very quickly so the moment you apply the vehicle brakes, the trailer or caravan starts braking.

The amount of braking force the trailer or caravan does can also be controlled by the unit. Ideally you want it to brake hard without locking the wheels as you don’t want the trailer to skid. Redarc, an Australian company, makes a very good compact controller which is being fitted to a 1997 Falcon Ute in this video.

Inside the kit you will find:

  • Comprehensive instructions
  • Dash Control
  • Module
  • 2 x wiring looms
  • Module to Dash Control (plug in both ends)
  • Module to vehicle wiring
  • Power (Black)
  • Earth (White)
  • Vehicle Braking Trigger (Red)
  • Trailer brake operation (Blue)

Also purchased was Redarc’s 30Amp Circuit Breaker kit which has:

  • Wiring Instructions
  • 2 wires and the 30Amp Circuit Breaker

Step By Step for Installing a Brake Controller

1

Read the instructions and find the section that relates best to the vehicle you have, as all vehicles are different you may use some or all of the installation techniques shown.

2

Work out where the dash control and module will go and make sure that the wiring loom that connects them will reach. The module needs to be mounted solidly so it cannot move or sway. This is important as it has an inertia switch in the unit. Fit the dash control so it is easily seen and reached from sitting in the driver’s seat.

3

Before drilling holes check to see what is behind the panels so you don’t damage any wiring or another component.

4

Once the dash control and module are mounted the wiring loom that connects them needs to be installed. Due to confined spaces under the dash, it is best to install this wiring loom while mounting these items. Plugging it in can be difficult once the units are mounted.

5

Power wiring: Using the 30 Amp Circuit breaker kit gets battery power from the battery under the bonnet to the black power wire on the module inside the cabin and provides circuit protection. To get through the metal firewall the bonnet release cable hole was used. It was large enough to accommodate the cable and saved drilling another hole in the firewall. Some Lanotec Type A grease was used to help ease the cable through the hole.

Earth wiring: This white wire can be simply screwed into the metal vehicle body.

To use a trigger that the vehicle is braking, you can use the brake light wire. Without cutting or breaking the brake light wire, tap the red wire into it for a connection. To identify it, check the wire colour that goes to the brake light globe. Then remove the scuff plate to access the boot wiring loom by the driver’s door. On some vehicles this may be on the passenger side. Carefully unwrap the insulation and find the brake light wire by its colour. Double check with a test lamp to prove it is correct.

8

Trailer Brake Operation wire: This needs to be connected to the correct pin on the trailer plug so the electric brakes can be operated on the trailer. Some vehicles have the trailer plug wired. Some may require you to run a new wire to the plug. In this case it was wired, and the blue wire was connected to it.

9

Soldering the wire connections and using heat shrink and a quality insulation tape makes the connections secure. Put back any trim or panels that were removed for the installation.

10

Pushing the controller knob causes it to light up as described in the manual. The next step is testing it with a trailer hooked up to the vehicle.
