How To Tell if Your Car Battery is About To Die

Checking if your car battery is nearing the end of its life is essential for avoiding sudden breakdowns or inconvenient vehicle malfunctions. There are several key indicators and tests you can perform to assess the health of your battery.
Slow Engine Crank
One of the most common signs of a failing battery is a slow engine crank when starting the car. If the engine takes longer than usual to turn over or if it struggles to start, this could indicate that the battery is weak and may soon die.
Dimming Lights
A dying battery may cause your vehicle’s lights, both interior and exterior, to dim. This includes headlights, dashboard lights, and cabin lights. If you notice that your lights are less bright than usual, it may be time to check the battery.
Battery Warning Light
Modern vehicles often have a dashboard warning light that indicates a problem with the battery or charging system. If this light comes on, it could mean the battery isn’t charging properly, and you should investigate further.
Corrosion on Terminals
Inspect your battery terminals for signs of corrosion or a white, powdery buildup. This can interrupt the connection and lead to charging issues, potentially shortening the battery’s life.
Testing the Voltage
You can test your battery’s voltage with a multimeter. Generally speaking, a healthy battery should read between 12.4 and 12.7 volts when the car is off. If the reading is below 12.4 volts, the battery may be losing its charge. If it falls below 12 volts, the battery is likely close to dying.
If you notice any of these signs, it’s a good idea to have your battery tested or replaced before it fails completely. You can head into your local Repco store to get the battery tested and get advice on replacing the battery if needed. We also sell auto electrical tools such as multimeters and battery so you can test the battery at home for yourself.
