OEX Starter Motors

Ensure your vehicle starts first time, every time.

What are the signs your starter motor may be failing?

As a vital component of your vehicle, your starter motor is relied upon every day to function faultlessly to get you to work, the kids to school or a trip to the shops. When issues begin to appear, and you suspect a faulty starter motor you may encounter some of the following symptoms:

  • A ‘clicking’ noise may occur when trying to start the engine.
  • The engine might not crank or turn over.
  • The starter motor will work sometimes but not at other times: an intermittent starting issue.
  • The starter motor engages but the engine doesn’t crank.

What should I look at when investigating a starter motor problem?

Regularly starter motor failures are related to voltage drop, where low battery voltage, a faulty battery or bad cable connections result in the starter motor failing. Always ensure your vehicle battery is in good condition and the cables from the battery to the starter motor are in a serviceable condition and the connections are clean and free of corrosion or dirt.

How does voltage drop affect a starter motor?

  • Burning of brushes and the commutator
  • Burning of the solenoid contacts causing the contacts to stick or not to pass current
  • Starter motor is not engaging or cranking

Points to check on the Starter Motor

Please ensure you keep hands free of moving parts

  • All cable connections, both positive and negative, should be clean and tight, and there should be no corrosion on the terminals or connections.
  • The battery itself should be checked (with a hydrometer, load meter or battery tester) to ensure that it is in good condition.
  • A DC voltmeter is required to check voltage.
  • Check the voltage across the battery terminals, when cranking, if this is less than 10V there may be a poor connection between the battery post and terminals, the battery may be low of charge, or the battery may be weak.
  • A voltmeter reading between the negative post of the battery, and the body of the starter motor is required to ensure there is minimal voltage drop (less than 0.5V) on the negative (earth) side of the starter motor.
