Tools for the Job

  • Wheel cover or hubcap
  • Rubber mallet or hammer with a rubber head
  • Flat blade screwdriver or pry tool (if necessary)
  • Gloves (optional)
  • Cleaning cloth

Prepare the Wheel and Cover

Before you begin, ensure that the wheel and the new wheel cover are clean and free of dirt or debris. This will help prevent any scratches or damage to the cover during installation. Take a moment to inspect the cover and wheel to ensure they are compatible and that the cover is the correct size for the wheel.

Note: Hubcaps or wheel covers are not designed to fit alloy wheels. The are designed for steel rims.

Wheel covers are measured in inches and use the diameter of the metal wheel rim.  Simply measure the diameter of the wheel rim or look on the tyre for the size. (Tyres have the diameter embossed on the tyre though you do have to know how to read it) So a 14-inch wheel cover suits a metal wheel rim with a 14-inch diameter.

Removing the Cover

Wheel covers use clips to hold them on which stay tensioned against the wheel rim. They are pressed on and levered off. Gently use the flat blade screwdriver or pry bar to carefully go around the outer edge of the cover to remove it. Don’t try and pry it off from the one spot. Simply insert the tool between the cover and wheel rim and lever downwards towards the tyre to move the cover outwards away from the rim.

They can suddenly pop off so to avoid damaging them, place a rag on the ground in front of the wheel to catch it.

Align the Cover

Place the wheel cover over the wheel rim, ensuring that it is aligned correctly. The easiest way to do this is most covers will have a notch cut out of them to allow for the tyres air valve to poke through. Simply match the cover notch up with the air valve. If you don't do this the cover may not fit well and you cannot check your tyre pressure. Take your time to ensure that the cover is centred and evenly positioned on the wheel.

Secure the Cover

Once the cover is aligned properly, use your hands to press firmly around the edges of the cover to secure it in place. Start at one edge and work your way around the circumference of the cover, pressing firmly. They are a tight fit, so some effort is required. If necessary, use a rubber mallet or hammer with a rubber head to gently tap the cover into place. Keep an eye on the tyre valve as sometimes the covers will move when being pressed on and can pitch or squeeze the tyre valve. Simply remove and refit the cover if this happens.

Check for Proper Fit

After securing the cover, take a step back and inspect the wheel to ensure that the cover is fitted securely and evenly. Look for any gaps or areas where the cover may be loose or misaligned. If necessary, adjust the cover and repeat the pressing process until it sits flush against the wheel.

Test the Cover

Before hitting the road, give the wheel cover a gentle tug to ensure that it is securely attached. If the cover feels loose or wobbly, double-check the alignment and re-secure it as needed. Once you're satisfied with the fit, give the cover a final inspection.

Tips for Troubleshooting

If you encounter any difficulties during the installation process, don't hesitate to refer to the manufacturer's instructions or seek assistance from a professional.

Maintain Your Wheel Covers

To keep your wheel covers looking their best, make it a habit to clean them regularly with a mild soap and water solution. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the finish of the covers. Additionally, inspect the covers periodically for any signs of damage or wear and replace them as needed to maintain the appearance and functionality of your wheels.
