Manual locking hubs vs. automatic locking hubs

28th May 2025 | 3 minutes to read

The classic debate on 4WD locking hubs. It's a small yet integral component of any 4WD. But for the uninitiated, the decision between manual locking hubs and automatic hubs can be as difficult as the Patrol vs. LandCruiser argument. Fear not, fellow bush mechanics, as we get into the nitty-gritty to figure out what suits your driving style best!

Find out which hubs are best for you below:

  1. Manual Hubs: Ole’ Reliable
  2. Automatic Hubs: Convenience With a Cost
  3. The Verdict

Manual Hubs: Ole’ Reliable

There's something poetic about manual hubs. The undeniably satisfying task of locking your hubs in by hand and engaging your 4WD system at the start of the track, always gets you pumped up for the adventure ahead.

They offer extra control, letting you turn your rig from a 4WD back to a 2WD for better fuel economy on the highway and reduced drivetrain wear. Plus, when things get hectic, you can troubleshoot and repair damaged ones on the side of a track more easily than auto locking hubs. But let's be real, getting out in the mud to lock them isn't always fun.

Typically, manual locking hubs are considered to be much stronger and handle more strain than auto locking hubs—so they are a worthwhile conversion if you like to tackle the tougher 4WD tracks or if you want that extra confidence in your rig.

Another secret bonus to having manual locking hubs is if you are often towing and own a manual transmission 4WD. The ability to go into low range without engaging your front axle (by leaving your hubs free) gives you unbelievable control while reversing your trailer without riding your clutch.

Automatic Hubs: Convenience With a Cost

Automatic hubs are the smooth-shifting, simple answer to the slight inconvenience of manual locking hubs. There’s no need to exit your vehicle, you can just engage 4WD and tackle what’s ahead. This convenience is perfect for tourers or weekend campers, as the simplicity is unbeaten.

With anything automatic, these can be more complex and prone to breakage if put under strain, and they don't offer the same fuel economy benefits as disconnected hubs. Plus, that feeling of connection to your machine, it's not quite the same.

The Verdict

We reckon it's fairly straight forward—if you're a hardcore 4WDer who craves reliability and strength (and doesn’t mind getting out of the vehicle), then manual hub conversions should be right up your alley.

But if you are after a simple touring lifestyle, with convenience in mind, then sticking with auto locking hubs is the way for you.

You really can’t go wrong either way. As long as your hubs are getting locked and you are getting out there, that’s all that matters! Just remember that everything has its trade-offs.
