How to charge a car battery without a battery charger

A flat battery is one of life’s inconveniences that can happen to the best of us. Whether a cold morning as you begin your commute, or late at night, there is never a great time to have your vehicle battery drained to the point of not starting your car.

We have all been there, and the frustration of turning the key and your car not instantly springing to life just adds more complexity to our already busy and stressful lives.

Whilst we cannot help with how your battery goes flat, we can offer some tips on how to get it going again and how to charge a car battery without a charger:

  1. Option 1: Use a Car Battery Jump Starter
  2. Option 2: Use Jumper Leads or Jumper Cables
  3. Option 3: Use a Solar Panel & Charger
  4. Option 4: Roll Starting Manual Vehicles
  5. Option 5: Use a Battery Isolator Switch
  6. Repco Battery Charging Options

Option 1: Use a Car Battery Jump Starter

Packing a powerful punch from these compact units, a car battery jump starter can crank your battery into life in mere seconds once attached. Simple to use and with very straight forward instructions you are able to provide the power needed for your engine to fire and for your vehicle alternator to begin recharging your flat car battery.

Some of the more basic units will have just battery clamps to connect to your positive and negative terminals on your battery whilst other more advanced battery jump starters will show level of charge in both the jump starter and the car battery to which it is connected.

Whichever one you choose, be sure that it has the capability to jump the vehicle and corresponding battery size and type. Repco has a huge selection of quality battery jump starters to suit your needs.

Option 2: Use Jumper Leads or Jumper Cables

You can also use jumper leads or jumper cables to get the necessary cranking power from a neighbouring vehicle.

While we can trust most people to endeavour to help when you are faced with a flat battery you cannot always guarantee they will have access to jump cables.

It pays to carry your own and with a few simple steps you can piggyback off the running vehicle to get the power you need to get going again. In most instances it is a case of connecting the positive and negative leads to the correct posts on each battery and then, whilst their vehicle is running you can crank your engine back to life.

Being extremely cost effective, a set of booster cables is a small price to pay to get you back on the road. Browse and shop our range of jumper leads, and make sure you have a set handy at all times.

Option 3: Use a Solar Panel & Charger

This is an option for those that do not require the battery to be pressed into service immediately. Our range of solar panels and solar accessories at Repco can set you up with a solar combination to maximise the sunlight and recharge your battery.

These solar panel setups are perfect for when you are off grid or on holidays and can provide the top up power whilst your vehicle is not being used. That way, when you go to turn the key and set off on the trip home your battery will be charged and full of power.

Solar panel kits are great for off grid charging and come equipped with everything you need to replenish your battery reserves.

Option 4: Roll Starting Manual Vehicles

While most cars these days have an automatic transmission, there is still the ability to start manual transmission cars by roll starting or push starting them. With the ability for your manual vehicle to free wheel, this allows you to roll the car to a speed that allows you to engage the clutch and start the car in gear. From there you can get the engine running again and this will once again allow your vehicle alternator to begin recharging your flat car battery.

Option 5: Use a Battery Isolator Switch

While not being much use after the battery is flat, a battery isolator switch is an effective measure to stop battery drain when you are away from your vehicle.

Attach the isolator switch to the negative battery lead to easily and effectively cut the power when the vehicle is not in use. By having a hard cut to the negative power cable, you can stop any parasitic battery drain which will eventually lead to a flat battery.

So, there you have it, a number of options that can be looked at when your car battery has given up the ghost. While some of these methods are easier or more achievable than others, they all have their place when faced with a dead or dying battery.
