When setting up a caravan, camping trailer or RV at a camp site it is important to try and keep the floor level. If on an angle, items in the van don't function as well as when it is level and sleep can be affected.

Oricom's RV Smart Leveller is the ideal tool that you can use to get your van, campervan or RV nice and level so you can enjoy your stay. While it does not do the levelling it provides a guide to let you know how much you need to adjust and in what direction. Lets find out how.

What is Basic Floor Levelling?

I'll explain it in nautical terms like a ship. To get a floor level on a van there is 2 planes we need to look at.

  • Pitch - which is the front and back of the van. This is the easist to adjust as once disconnected from the tow car, the jockey wheel at the front can adjust the pitch by lowering or raising the front of the van. Raising the front will lower the back and vice versa so at some point the 2 ends will be level.
  • Roll - which is left and right hand side of the van. This is controlled by the wheel or wheels on either side and more difficult to adjust. An easy method is to use wheel chocks on the lower side to lift it to meet the higher side.

When first looking to park your van it pays to try and get the roll or wheels as level as possible as the pitch is easier to adjust. This is OK if parking in a paddock where you have the room to manoeuvre where in a caravan park, space is far more limited. Most parks will allow for this and most sites are fairly level.

What is an RV Smart Leveller?

Oricoms RV Smart Leveller is a small square box that mounts inside your van or RV. It talks to a free App that you need to install on your Apple or Android smart phone. The App shows you in real time how level the floor is so you can see where you need to make any adjustments.

The Oricom Smart Leveller App lets you see in real time how the van is in pitch and roll. The 3 x seperate app images show the different adjustment stages until the van is level when compared to the baseline you set. The red colour means more work is needed, green is within tolerance and OK.

How do you Install the Leveller?

To install the leveller, ideally start with the caravan, camper trailer or RV on flat or even ground. If you have access to a car hoist, even better. They are usually level. This is required after the install to set your baseline.

You can use a spirit level on the floor to check that your van is level in pitch and roll. The more accurately you do this the flatter your floor will be when using the leveller at a camp site.

Step 1: Install the App on your smart phone as this helps when installing the unit and setting the baseline or "set level".

Step 2: Insert the 2 supplied AA batteries into the unit.

Step 3: Make sure the unit is connected to the App as this will assist you in mounting the unit correctly.

Step 4: Use the 2 x screws or doubled sided tape provided to mount the leveller to an internal wall or cupboard in the van facing inwards. Make sure it is out of the way so you don't knock or brush past it and that you can easily access the batteries when they need replacing.

Step 4a: Range This is critical to consider if wanting to use the unit real time when parking your van while in the tow vehicles driver seat. The unit range is under 10m. If you have a large van and mount the unit at the back of it, you may not be able to connect if you are in the tow vehicle drivers seat. Ideally mount it in the mid-point or towards the front of the van.

Step 5: Once your happy with the install and the vans level in pitch and roll you can set the level or baseline. Now whenever you park at a camp site the leveller will tell the App how level your van is compared to your "set level".

How do you Use the Leveller?

The greatest feature the leveller has is you can see the levels in real time on your smartphone screen. If backing into a spot in a caravan park the leveller will keep you updated on the levels. You can do a run and see where the best spot is. You need to take it slow and may need to stop every now and then but it will give you a good indication of where it is the most level. With a van, Roll or across the wheels is more critical than pitch. An RV is more difficult as adjustment is not as easy.

Remember it is not a billiard table and does not need to be perfect. Simply adjust it so it is comfortable and functional. Once parked and in place you can make finer adjustments as required by using the App as a guide.
