The Original Household Batteries

The humble household battery has been around for decades. Eveready got its start in the early 1900's when the American Eveready Company, developer of the flashlight, joined forces with the National Carbon Company, developer of the first D-sized dry cell battery. In 1907, Eveready announced a new battery - the AA size - and introduced several styles of compact vest lights that used this new battery. The innovation continued throughout the years with the development of the AAA battery in 1911, the first 9-volt battery in 1956 and the first alkaline battery in 1957.

Since then, families have used Eveready batteries to power their toys, clocks and other everyday devices. The Eveready name continues to stand for trust and reliability. The design has stayed the same, a round metal tube filled with chemicals, flat on one end (negative -) and a raised pimple at the other end (positive +) so you can easily tell them apart. There are 4 main sizes for these:

Smallest to largest

AAA Battery or Triple A Battery (1.5V)

Along with the Double AA battery, one of the most widely used and comes in bulk packs of various sizes. You can even get rechargeable ones. There is now an industrial version and a lithium one that lasts much longer than the standard version. Gaining popularity as electronic devices get smaller and need less power to do the same job. Commonly used in remotes to operate TV’s, gaming consoles, heating and cooling units, powering torches and toys

AA Battery or Double A Battery (1.5V)

Along with the Triple AAA battery, one of the most widely used and comes in bulk packs of various sizes. You can even get rechargeable ones. There is now an industrial version and a lithium one that lasts much longer than the standard version. This size has been around for decades. Commonly used in remotes to operate TV’s, gaming consoles, heating and cooling units, powering torches and toys.

C Cell or C size Battery (1.5V)

Not so often used as modern electronics and improvements in battery technology means you can do the same with less. They last longer than a Double AA or Triple AAA battery, it is their bulky physical size that makes them less popular. Still used in items that can easily hide them and use more power like torches, boom boxes, toys and radio’s. There is also an industrial version.

D Cell or D size Battery (1.5V)

Not so often used as modern electronics and improvements in battery technology means you can do the same with less. They are more popular than the C Cell as they are more powerful and last a lot longer than all 3 smaller batteries. They are used in industrial applications where their bulky physical size doesn’t matter. You can find them in torches, boom boxes, toys, musical instruments and radio’s

9V Battery

This is the final battery to cover off in this range looks different to all the batteries above it and comes in a rectangular shape. The positive (+) and negative (-) terminals sit right next to each other and are shaped differently so you cannot connect them the wrong way around. The most common use of for these was smoke detectors though you can find them in gas detectors, clocks, radios, electric guitars and effects units.

Lantern or Dolphin Battery (6V)

This is a large rectangle shaped battery that is used in Eveready's torch or Dolphin torch as it was called as it could float if dropped in water. Much like the smaller 9V battery both terminals are on one end of the battery and are like a coiled spring. This is so they could push against the metal contact strip to give a strong electrical connection if you roughly treated the torch.

The Next Generation

There are some smaller more powerful batteries that look similar to a Triple AAA Battery but pack a heftier punch when it comes to power output. They work the same way, just have a different internal makeup.

N Battery (1.5V)

The N battery is similar in size and shape to the A23 battery though with different voltages they are NOT interchangeable. Also know as LR1, LR01, 810, 910A, MN9100, MN9100B, 4001, 4001B, E90, KN, 810, 23-023, AM5, UM5, UM-5, SUM5, Lady Battery, & E90BP2. Designed to be used in modern electronic devices such as bike computers, clock radio’s, security devices, medical devices, fitness devices and lights.

A23 Battery (12V)

Also known as 23AE, GP23A, V23GA, LRV08, 8LR932, 8LR23, MN21, & L1028. Used in car alarms, remote controls, garage door openers, medical equipment, security systems, telecommunication devices, headsets and toys.

A27 Battery (12V)

Also known as GP27A, MN27, L828, 27A, V27A, A27BP & G27A. The A27 is slightly shorter and thinner than the A23. The difference is minimal. Used in car alarms, remote controls, garage door openers, medical equipment, security systems, telecommunication devices, headsets, and toys.

Battery Safety

Do Not let children play with batteries even if they are flat. They are filled with chemicals and are not toys. Always make sure batteries are stored out of reach or in a locked draw or cupboard. Toys should be checked to make sure battery compartments are secure.

When storing a battery operated product for long periods it is a good idea to remove the batteries. They can leak over time and the acid can permanently damage the product.

Disposing of flat, leaking or discharged batteries. Aldi Supermarkets or Officeworks will recycle AA, AAA, C, D and 9V batteries both rechargeable and non-rechargeable types.
