Whilst not as much of an issue in older cars with lower compression, modern vehicles now have tighter tolerances and the risk of running hot, and causing predetonation, could destroy pistons and other engine components. EGR valves that become stuck 'open' or 'closed' due to a build-up of soot particles, carbon deposits and dirt from fuel also lead to rougher idling and stalling, decreased fuel efficiency and reduction in engine power.
