Snow Chains
If you head to the mountains during winter trying to get in some skiing, boarding or just taking in the sights, then snow chains are a must have. You don't need to have them on all the time, it is only when conditions are bad enough, like ice or snow on the road. Most places advise snow conditions and when chains are required to be fitted. You need to have a set of them with you in the vehicle as weather conditions can change quickly. It may be a warm sunny day when you head up and it could be a blizzard when coming back down. It is mandatory to carry chains for this reason.
You can hire them but if you travel often enough it is worth purchasing your own set. Each set has 2 chains for 2 tyres. It saves the hassle of picking them up and returning them and you know your chains will fit your car. Snow chains are designed to fit over your tyres and can be tricky to fit. It is important to get the correct chains for your tyre size. Definitely test fit them before travelling as you need to make sure they fit correctly and you need to know how to actually put them on and take them off.
It is a lot harder to work this out standing on the side of an icy road. Also, if not fitted correctly they can cause vehicle damage if they loosen up and start flailing around. The saving grace now are chain fitting stations. These pop up when chains are required and for a fee they will fit your snow chains for you. Chains are always harder to fit, easier to remove. It is wet, cold, dirty work and some enterprising people have found a niche market.
Popular Questions Asked
Do I need to fit chains to all 4 tyres?
You only need to fit them to the driving wheels of your car. Some drivers prefer to fit them to all 4 tyres using 2 sets of chains. This is not mandatory though there are big benefits to doing it. In most conditions 1 set is all you need.
Do 4x4's need Snow Chains?
Even though they are excluded from having to carry and fit chains, it is highly recommended that drivers of 4 wheel drives and constant 4 wheel drives (All wheel drives) carry snow chains and fit them when required. If you have winter tyres on your vehicle then you are exempt.
How fast can I drive with Snow Chains fitted?
Approximately 45 km/h or 30 mph.
Can Snow Chains damage tyres?
Only if incorrectly fitted or you run them on a dry road. Chains are only fitted when ice or snow is on the road. You can also damage snow chains if driving on a dry road.
